Hangars and steel-frame buildings

Heating a steel-frame hangar — ceiling-mounted Mycond OXA units below the roof trusses

The typical hangar problem

  • A lightweight steel frame with minimal insulation loses a great deal of heat through the envelope.
  • There is neither the space nor the load capacity for heavy ducted systems.
  • Enormous doors let all the heat straight out.
  • Often there is no heat network at all, so the source has to be self-contained.

Worked example

An 1,800 m² hangar, 10 m high, no heat network, heat loss of 180 kW.

  • OXA GD-2 (60 kW) — 3 units with coaxial flues.
  • Mounted on the trusses, with the suspension monitored by the six-axis tilt sensor.
  • Controls: OXA-V plus 2 OXA-T2 sensors, night setback to +8 °C.

The investor’s view: a hangar with no boiler house

A steel-frame hangar is the fastest industrial building there is, and the heating should not be what holds up handover. Gas units with an integral burner are running in days rather than months: no plant room, no heat main, no water treatment.

  • Commissioned in 9 days after delivery — the actual figure from the case below; a boiler house of comparable output takes 4 to 9 months to build.
  • 98.9 % efficiency at the point of use: in a metal envelope with high infiltration, every percentage point of efficiency is multiplied by large losses.
  • Protecting what is stored: an even temperature with no condensation cycles is corrosion protection for the asset, not merely comfort.
  • No gas supply? DX OXA-530N/670N units on a condensing unit: heat pump in winter, air conditioning in summer, and installation still measured in weeks.

Case study

An 1,800 m² equipment storage hangar, 10 m high: 3 × OXA GD. No pipework to install, and the system was running 9 days after delivery.

OXA equipment selection

Send us the basics of your building: floor area, ceiling height, what the space is used for and the energy source available (water, electricity, gas or refrigerant). You will get back the recommended series, the number of units and a suggested layout.
